FAQ

Do you take my health insurance?

Evolve Flagstaff is out-of-network with all health insurance companies. We charge a flat per-visit fee at the end of each appointment. Fees for each appointment type are listed on the scheduling page. We do accept Health Savings Account credit/debit cards. We can provide a detailed receipt with approrpiate billing codes for submission of an out-of-network claim, if necessay. We do this for a few reasons:

  • To give you the best possible treatment. Health insurance reimbursements can influence the treatments that providers give to their patients. We want to be able to provide you with the best and most appropriate care. Period.
  • To give you our undivided time and attention. Providers who accept health insurance usually need to see at least two people an hour, often double-booked with assistants, in order to make ends meet. We want to give you the one-on-one time and attention you deserve.
  • So you need fewer visits. When we focus 100% of our time on you and your care, each session becomes incredibly focused and effective. This means that you need see us less often. This usually saves time and money in the long run.
  • To provide you with clarity and transparency. Paying for healthcare is a mess. We’re healthcare providers, and we still dread trying to make sense of our own doctor’s bills, “Explanation of Benefit” letters, and the endless list of health insurance jargon. And there’s nothing worse than getting a gigantic unexpected bill weeks or months down the road. That will never happen with us.
We truly believe that by stepping outside of established health insurance models, we can provide you with better care, more clarity, and ultimately lower costs in the long run.

How are you different from other physical therapists? I’ve tried PT before and I’m not sure if it helped. I never did my exercises.

  • Time: Being out-of-network with health insurance companies gives us an incredible amount of additional time compared to other health providers. This time is perhaps our most valuable resource. It allows us to:
    • Spend more time with you, undistracted, unhurried, and as effective as possible.
    • Spend more time thinking about you and your condition. We rarely see more than 5 patients per day, compared to 10-15 or more for other health providers. This means that we have time to think and reflect to ensure that you are progressing appropriately.
    • Spend more time studying and refining our skillset. More time lets us focus on being better clinicians, every single day. This translates into better, faster results for you.
  • Specific diagnosis: We have extensive training in the nearly lost art of physical examination and diagnosis. The primary goal of your initial evaluation will be identify what is causing you pain and provide a clear diagnosis. This is crucial because it gives you clarity on your condition, helps to provide a more accurate prognosis, and allows treatment to be laser-focused.
  • Comprehensive Approach: Because we have more time, we can zoom out to see the big picture. We consider not just where you have pain, but also all of the various factors that can affect your condition, such as range of motion, movement technique, strength and endurance, nutrition, sleep, stress, and more.
  • Targeted treatments: You won’t get a scattershot of complex or boring exercises at Evolve Flagstaff. The majority of most sessions are spent on targeted manual therapy to relieve pain and symptoms, followed by a small number of exercises or behavior changes to facilitate recovery.
  • Fast results: The combination of specific diagnosis, targeted treatment, and focused 1-1 time usually leads to faster results and fewer visits.

Why should I see a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) instead of a... (certified nutritionist, health coach, the internet, my best friend, my personal trainer, my mom)?

The current nutrition world is a little confusing, we know. (We are not discrediting your mom; she is probably great.) You're busy and may not have the time to decipher all of this information. We are credentialed professionals who have put the time in to learn and distill all things nutrition so that we can share the right knowledge and strategies with you.

In order to become an RDN, you must complete a Bachelor of Science or Master’s degree in nutrition and along with specific course work. Much of the degree is focused on biochemistry, biology, and physiology, because that is what nutrition is - biochemistry. On top of a degree program you must complete 1200 hours of supervised clinical practice with experienced RDNs. Although there is a lot of great information out there, there's also impractical and possibly dangerous information. Our RDN will help you identify and break your key barriers, transforming your body and your life.

How is your approach to nutrition different than what I might find somewhere else?

Our approach to nutrition is different in a few ways. First, we practice an intuitive eating, Health and Every Size approach. What this means is that we don't label any foods as inherenetly "good" or "bad," and we don't simply tell you to lose weight. Instead, we explore the challenges you have, along with your relationship to food and your body. Our goal is to help you chart a path that makes sense for YOU, and that can include eating foods that you love. We don’t start by overwhelming you with information. There’s so much accessible nutrition-related information online, in print, on TV and in conversation, so you aren't lacking in information. Knowledge is rarely the biggest nutrition-related barrier for our clients.

Rather, the application of nutrition principles in a systematic way with a long-term focus is what is so often missing from conversations about food. Food is not only fuel, but it is culture, it is life and it is engrained in everything. We remove any and all guilt about eating and food, and won’t try to impose some ridiculous lifestyle on you. All of our clients are smart, successful, and don't have time to flip their entire lives upside down. We start instead by making small tweaks to daily habits. These layer over time to create remarkable transformations. We’ll drop some knowledge when we need to, but most important is creating a realistic, long-term plan that will take you to your goals.

What about x-rays, MRI’s, and other images?

You do not need to get an x-ray, MRI, or any other image prior to making an appointment. We can discuss imaging in your phone strategy session or initial evaluation, if appropriate. However, a nuanced physical examination (performed in all physical therapy initial evaluations) can often better identify the cause of your symptoms than imaging.

I’m scheduled to have surgery. Can you help me?

We would love to. While we try to help our clients avoid the operating room if at all possible, sometimes surgeries do happen. If this is you, we can help both before and after your operation. Before surgery, we can perform a consult to maximize your post-surgical outcomes. This normally includes an evaluation to identify your pain generators, assess strength and range of motion, and create a surgical nutrition plan. There's quite a bit research about pre-op/post-op nutrition to help decrease infection rates as well as improve post-op healing.

After surgery, we want to get you back to doing what you love as quickly as possible. We also want to help you lay a bulletproof foundation to prevent the need for future surgeries. Post-surgical care usually includes manual therapy for pain and swelling control, targeted exercises to regain motion and strength, and a focused nutrition plan to optimize healing. We’ll be with you every step of the way to ensure you have excellent outcomes. We can develop custom physical therapy and nutrition packages specific to your needs.

What about Medicare?

Medicare is different than normal insurance. At this time, providers that are not associated with Medicare cannot see patients enrolled in Medicare. Law prevents us from providing Medicare patients with care that would be considered “normally covered services.” If you have questions, please contact us.
