You’re Not Just Getting Old — Here’s Why You Feel Sore, Stiff, and Achy (and How to Feel Athletic Again at Any Age)
“Why do I feel stiff, sore, and achy all the time? Am I just getting old?”
We here this all to often at EVOLVE. People tell us:
“I’m just getting old.”
“There’s nothing to do—it’s just aging.”
“I don’t move like I used to. That’s just part of getting older.”
It doesn’t actually seem to matter how old you are. We’ve heard it from people in their 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, and 70s.
Sometimes it comes after a surprising injury: a pulled hamstring at rec softball; a tweaked knee from dancing at a wedding (we see you, we feel you, and you’re not alone); a back strain from shoveling snow.
Or maybe you just feel like you need to spend a week in bed after spending a day skiing or jumping into a charity 10km run.
Almost always, the explanation is the same: “Well, I’m not 25 anymore.”
But here’s the truth: you’re not broken, and you’re not destined to lose your athleticism.
The Myth of “I’m Just Getting Old”
If you Google “Why do I feel stiff and sore after 40?” you’ll see a pretty gloomy answer: muscle loss, decreased flexibility, slower recovery, joint pain. This makes it sound like decline is inevitable.
But, this is far from the whole story. Yes, bodies change with age—but you’re not powerless. You can feel strong, capable, and athletic well into your 40s, 50s, 60s, and beyond.
At EVOLVE, we’ve seen it firsthand, everyday for almost a decade: people regaining strength, agility, and energy they thought were gone forever. Aging doesn’t mean resigning yourself to fond memories of your youthful athleticism. There are reasons why you “start feeling your age,” you can overcome almost all of them with the right approach.
15 Reasons You Feel Stiff, Sore, or Injured as you get older
Here are the most common reasons adults start to feel “old” in their bodies. And we’ll give you the good news up-front: our EVOLVE Strong program, available in-person at our gym in Flagstaff and accessible anywhere online, is specifically designed to help you change the story:
1. You don’t move as much as you used to.
Good news: you don’t need to train like a pro athlete. But you might need more movement throughout your day, and more movement variety.
2. You only move in one direction and at one speed.
Hiking, cycling, and running are great—but life demands bursts, stops, twists, and direction changes. Without practicing these, you’ll feel clumsy and injury-prone.
3. You’ve forgotten how to play.
Gym culture emphasizes rigid technique. While important, it can rob us of the joy and spontaneity of play — something our bodies were built for.
4. You’ve lost strength.
Without strength training, muscle naturally declines starting in your 30s. You might not notice this at first, but eventually tasks that were once easy will feel harder or more risky. Fear not: with intentional training, you can actually gain strength as you age.
Balance, coordination, agility, strength: these can be retrained and regained.
5. Your balance, coordination, and agility have faded.
These are trainable skills, not fixed traits. But most programs overlook them in favor of elements that are more measurable, like your mile pace or squat weight.
6. You go hard on weekends, but not during the week
You got out 4–5 times a week in your 20’s, but that’s not realistic. Work, family, life. A purposeful gym program can fill the gaps and keep you ready for your next adventure.
7. You’re doing workouts that aren’t right for your goals
You don’t need to train like a CrossFit competitor or powerlifter. You need a plan that’s right for where you are now, and where you want to go.
8. Your workouts aren’t balanced
Most plans overwork certain muscles while neglecting mobility, stability, or coordination — leading to imbalance and strain.
9. You follow a bodybuilder’s routine
Muscle splits (chest day, arm day, etc.) may look organized (and/or seem overwhelming) but rarely translate to the dynamic, multi-joint movement life requires.
10. You’re lifting only light weights
You didn’t strain your back because the suitcase was heavy, but because you weren’t prepared to lift it. Let’s build strength and confidence to handle the heavier demands of life.
11. You’re only lifting heavy weights
Heavy is good — but without also working on mobility, coordination, speed, and endurance, you’re building a narrow skillset.
12. You’re not fueling your body well
Under-eating (especially carbs and protein) impairs recovery, increases soreness, and kills energy.
The right coach and community can make all the difference
13. You are trying to do it on your own
No one’s born knowing how to do this stuff. Research shows that most people struggle to strength train effectively without guidance. Coaching isn’t a crutch—it’s expertise. And with a coach or class, people stick with it longer and get stronger.
14. You make too many bad jokes about aging
We’ve heard them all—and they’re not as funny as you think. Your words shape your reality. Stop putting yourself down or blaming your age.
15. You’ve accepted decline as “Normal”
The truth? You can feel more athletic at 45 than you did at 25—with the right plan.
